Vaccine Allergy

Vaccines can contain proteins that are capable of inducing an allergic reaction. Symptoms are identical to any other type of allergic reaction – itching, hives, difficulty breathing, cough, low blood pressure, and fainting. It is important to be evaluated by an allergist to confirm an allergy to a vaccine because it can affect future vaccinations.

Some vaccines are manufactured using egg embryos and as a result may have variable amounts of egg protein in them. The amount of egg protein in MMR ( Measles Mumps Rubella) and the FLU vaccines is very minimal and is unlikely to cause a reaction in most people with egg allergy. However, for those with a severe egg allergy, they can be administered in with a desensitization mode where graduated doses are given over a longer period of time to decrease the risk of a serious reaction, while equipment and trained personnel are present in case of a reaction.

If you suspect allergy to a vaccine, have had a reaction to one or are concerned due to egg allergy, we can evaluate the problem, test you for the allergy and if necessary, administer the vaccine using standard protocols, with much lower risk of reaction.
