Peanut Allergy Desensitization

Peanut allergy is the most common food allergy in children in the U.S. And the incidence has increased by 21% in the last 10 years. Currently an estimated 2.5% of US school children are allergic to Peanuts. No wonder PBJ sandwiches are banned in many schools. As any parent of a child with a serious food allergy knows, the constant vigilance required to prevent a reaction takes a significant toll on the whole family's peace of mind.

Despite carrying an Epi auto-injector and Medic-alert bracelet the constant fear of unintentional ingestion is the biggest stressor for the parents. You may have heard that FDA recently approved 'Palforzia' which contains refined form of peanut allergen that can induce tolerance to three to six peanut kernels. While this is far from being able to enjoy a PBJ sandwich at will, it does eliminate the risk of serious reaction from and accidental bite of a Reese cup, an M&M, cupcake at a birthday party, or a bite of Chow Mein; things that keeps the mom on pins and needles as long as the kid is out of sight.
